EDTECH REFLECTION #4: Inquiry with Trevor MacKenzie

This week’s lesson on inquiry-based learned was given by Trevor Mackenzie, author of Dive into Inquiry and Inquiry Mindset. In his presentation, he asked us a simple question: How can we allow students the space to create and shape their own learning?

This was incredibly inspiring as an upcoming teacher because I know that what I remember the most from my own elementary experience were the times that I was the most hands-on as a student.

What got me the most excited about my practicum at the end of term were his stories about the connections he made with students. How he made their curiosities come to life through whatever means possible.

When I was in elementary, there wasn’t very many opportunities for inquiry-based learning in class. I remember entering the science fair in 6th grade and deciding to study salt-water crocodiles because they interested me and ended up winning money ($25) from my final website that I designed (with help).

“As a classroom teacher, Trevor uses technology to enhance his teaching as he leverages blended learning, inquiry-based learning, iPad Ed, and student blogging as a means to reflect on learning.  He strives to make learning public and meaningful and support innovation and connection amongst educators.”

Although this was outside of school time, I still remember the pride I had from all of the work I put into it, and I hope to instill a similar feeling with my future students. The high quality of work put into a final project is so apparent when the subject is one that you are truly interested in.

I will remember this presentation for a long time and I can’t wait to put these ideas into action, thank you Trevor!
