FREE INQUIRY: PART B (Portrait)

For my second attempt at iPhone photography, I decided to use the theme of “portraits” to guide my shots.

I learned that when shooting portraits outdoors, it’s best to work when the sun is low in the sky, known as golden hour, which you can see in the featured image for this post of myself.

I also learned through some research that overcast skies are also perfect for shooting portraits because they provide subtle, diffused light, that doesn’t create harsh shadows on the subject’s face.

For both photos I used a background that was simple (the ocean) and made the foreground subjects pop. The self-portrait I took was a more formal photo with the subject looking straight into the camera, and the second photo down below I wanted to capture a more candid moment that evokes a different feelings in the viewer.

To get the best results for portraits with the iPhone, switch the camera into portrait mode. This adds blur to the background and makes your subject pop even more.

Based on my photography experience so far, portraits are my favourite type of image to take, and I look forward to practicing a lot more through (socially distant) photoshoots in the future.
